These magnificent creatures inhabit the icy expanse of Canada, Alaska, Greenland, Russia, and Norway. Despite their name, polar bears are not found in Antarctica — an important reminder of how geography has shaped their survival. Their scientific name, Ursus maritimus, translates to “sea bear,” reflecting their deep connection to the icy waters they call home.

Climate change, with its unrelenting grip, threatens their icy kingdom. As Arctic ice retreats, polar bears face the harsh reality of dwindling habitats and scarcer hunting grounds.

This article explores the lives of polar bears, their remarkable adaptations, the threats they face, and why their survival is critical to the Arctic and the planet as a whole.
